The Love Triangle
Lucy, a high-end matchmaker in New York City, finds herself in a love triangle with Harry, a charming financier, and John, her ex-boyfriend and a struggling actor. The Decision
After breaking up with Harry, Lucy and John take a trip upstate, where they crash a wedding and experience a romantic evening. However, their tryst is cut short when Lucy receives a panicked call from her client, Sophie (Zoë Winters), who needs help dealing with a sexual assault incident. Lucy and John return to New York, and Lucy decides to get back together with John.
The Proposal
In the closing minutes of the movie, John proposes to Lucy in Central Park, asking her to make a "very bad financial decision" - a callback to the first scene of the movie, where a neanderthal couple engage in a similar ritual. The movie concludes with the couple obtaining their marriage license at City Hall.
The Director's Take
In an interview with IndieWire, Song recognized that half of marriages end in divorce, giving Lucy and John a 50-50 chance of staying together. Song added that the couple's chances of staying together would drop further if Lucy takes a promotion or John catches a bigger break.
No Post-Credit Scene, But an Easter Egg
There is no post-credit scene at the end of Materialists, but there is an Easter egg worth staying for. At the end of the credits, the neanderthal couple reappear among the people getting married at City Hall, making their marriage official.
