Oklahoma City Thunder guard Jalen Williams, 24, revealed that he had never tried alcohol before Sunday night, but made good on a promise to his teammates to indulge if they won the championship.
In an interview with ESPN's SportsCenter host Christine Williamson, Williams said, "Yesterday was my first time drinking ever, like, I've never had a drink up til that point. And the beginning of the season, the guys wanted me to drink. But I told them, win a championship, I'll drink, I'll do whatever you guys want."
Williams described his experience with alcohol as "all disgusting," saying he had a couple of shots of champagne and beer. However, in a video taken before the team's victory parade, Williams was seen holding a box of Don Julio and a bottle of champagne, and said he was "feeling good, feeling loose."
Williams' teammates, including veteran guard Alex Caruso, also made headlines for not knowing how to open a champagne bottle. According to OKC center Isaiah Hartenstein, some teammates even went on YouTube to watch tutorials on how to uncork a bottle.
The Oklahoma City Thunder's median age is 25.6, making them the second-youngest team to ever win an NBA title, according to the league.
