Scarlett Johansson Eyes Directing Marvel Film after Cannes Debut

Scarlett Johansson has expressed her interest in directing a Marvel Cinematic Universe film, following the premiere of her directorial debut, Eleanor the Great, at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival.

In an interview with Deadline, Johansson stated, "Yeah, definitely, it could be, it would be fun" when asked about potentially directing a major action movie or Marvel film. The actress-turned-director emphasized the importance of human connectivity in big action movies, citing her experience producing Black Widow and developing the story between Natasha and Yelena.

Johansson's directorial debut, Eleanor the Great, received a five-minute standing ovation at the Cannes premiere, which she attended alongside her husband Colin Jost. The film is a comically poignant exploration of how the stories we hear become the stories we tell.

Any future collaboration with Marvel Studios would come after Johansson settled a lawsuit against Disney in 2021 over her compensation for Black Widow. At the time, she accused the company of breaching her contract by releasing the film on Disney+ simultaneously with its theatrical release.
