Michael Jackson Biopic Likely Delayed by a Year Due to Controversies

Published: May 23, 2025

The highly anticipated Michael Jackson biopic, titled "Michael", is unlikely to hit theaters before the end of 2025, according to Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer. The film, directed by Antoine Fuqua and starring Jaafar Jackson as the King of Pop, was initially scheduled for release on April 18, 2025, but was pushed to October 3, 2025, in November. However, due to major reshoots, the film might not be released until after April 2026.

Feltheimer stated that it was "likely" the studio will have to move the film out of the 2025 fiscal year, which will impact fiscal '26 financial results but will bolster an already strong fiscal '27 slate. Lionsgate's fiscal year ends on March 31, 2026, meaning the film might not hit theaters until after April 2026.

The biopic has been plagued by controversies, including the need for major reshoots due to a clause in a settlement agreement between Jackson and one of his accusers. The settlement specified that the accusers could never be mentioned or dramatized in a movie, which was overlooked when the screenplay was previously vetted and approved.

In late January, it was reported that the film would need to be overhauled during reshoots after lawyers learned of the clause in the settlement agreement. The film's script featured the accuser situation, which was not mentioned in the settlement.

In addition to the reshoots, the film will also be split into two parts, as confirmed by Lionsgate film chief Adam Fogelson. The exact release dates for the two parts have not been announced.

The Jackson estate has repeatedly denied abuse accusations made against the late singer, who was acquitted of child molestation charges in 2005. Additional allegations were aired in the 2019 documentary Leaving Neverland, prompting an ongoing legal battle.
