The live-action remake of Lilo & Stitch has taken the box office by storm, and Disney Entertainment co-chairman Alan Bergman believes the franchise has more to offer. In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Bergman expressed confidence in the film's performance, saying it "lends itself to more."
Box Office Success
The highly-anticipated adaptation has become the biggest Memorial Day weekend debut since Top Gun: Maverick in 2022, with a record-breaking $183 million, according to Box Office Mojo.
In an exclusive statement to Disney, director Dean Fleischer Camp aimed to reimagine the original while maintaining its essence. "We tried to adapt it in a way that paid loving tribute to the original but wasn't a one-to-one literal translation," Camp said.
Potential Sequels
Disney has previous sequels to draw inspiration from, including Stitch! The Movie (2003), Lilo & Stitch 2: Stitch Has a Glitch (2005), and Leroy & Stitch (2006). These films explored Stitch's struggles with adapting to life on Earth and his biological alien family.
Sydney Agudong, who plays Nani in the remake, praised the film's authentic representation of Hawaiian culture. "Hawaii is extremely talented... To finally get a platform that showcases that, it was absolutely amazing to see. I really hope that it will spark more of that in the future," she told PEOPLE.
Future Disney Live-Action Remakes
Several beloved animated movies are slated to hit the big screen, including Moana and The Aristocats.
