Actor Nick Frost is set to bring a fresh spin to the beloved character of Rubeus Hagrid in the upcoming Harry Potter series adaptation. Frost, known for his roles in Shaun of the Dead and other comedy hits, has big shoes to fill following the passing of Robbie Coltrane, who originally played Hagrid in the film series.
Frost recently spoke with Collider about his approach to the role, emphasizing his intention to put his own unique spin on the character. "I'm never going to try and be Robbie," Frost said. "I'm going to try to do something, not 'different' – I think you have to be respectful to the subject matter – but within that, there's scope for minutia."
Frost's interpretation of Hagrid is centered around the character's complexity, which he describes as "a lovely, lost, violent, funny, warm child." He hopes to explore these traits in his representation of the character, which he believes will be distinct from Coltrane's portrayal.
Frost is also excited to be a part of the magical set, having already started the process of "head sculpts" and other special effects measures. As a lifelong cinema fan, he says it's a thrill to experience.
The new series' cast also includes Dominic McLaughlin, Alastair Stout, and Arabella Stanton as Harry, Ron, and Hermione, as well as John Lithgow as Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Professor McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Professor Snape, Luke Thallon as Professor Quirrell, and Paul Whitehouse as Filch.
