The cause of death for 16-year-old track star Espoir Missite has been revealed as bacterial pneumonia with asthmatic bronchitis as a complicating factor, according to reports.
According to The Minnesota Star Tribune and The Spun, the Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office confirmed the cause of death for the teen, who passed away on February 25.
Missite, a junior at Maple Grove Senior High School in Minnesota, was found on a trail near his school in the early evening of February 25. He was transported to the hospital, where he later died.
A GoFundMe page set up to support Missite's family raised over $22,000 and said that the teenager had suffered a cardiac arrest. His funeral was held on March 4.
Alain Hambike, who organized the fundraiser, described Missite as someone whose "lively spirit and passion for science, sport and life impacted everyone he encountered, and his absence is profoundly felt by all."
