Jonathan Bailey Opens Up About Being an Out Gay Actor in Hollywood

Jonathan Bailey, known for his roles in Bridgerton and Wicked, has recently spoken about the pressure he felt leading Jurassic World Rebirth as an out gay actor. In a cover story for The Hollywood Reporter, Bailey admitted that he felt the "weight of history" in co-headlining the movie alongside Scarlett Johansson.

“There’s moments where, yes, you have to be excellent to prove that you can do it. And it’s not like I haven’t felt that. There’s the weight of history," he told the outlet. "And there’s people who have come before you who have changed the way that people see sexuality."

Bailey, 37, added that being an out gay actor historically meant that you wouldn't be able to play straight roles, and there weren't any gay parts to play anyway. However, he believes that this has changed massively over time.

In the new Jurassic World installment, Bailey plays a paleontologist named Dr. Loomis, alongside a star-studded cast including Mahershala Ali, Rupert Friend, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Luna Blaise, David Iacono, Audrina Miranda, Philippine Velge, Bechir Sylvain, and Ed Skrein.

Previous Jurassic Park Films

Previous Jurassic Park films have been led by stars like Sam Neill, Jeff Goldblum, Laura Dern, Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, and more.

In a previous interview with Attitude magazine in February 2021, Bailey spoke about being discouraged to come out as gay while pursuing an acting career. He said that the most conservative conversations he's had about being honest about his sexuality in this day and age have come from gay men in the industry.

“There’s a sense of shame, I think, that’s palpable throughout gay men within the industry. But then there’s also this heteronormative, heterosexual understanding of sexuality," said Bailey.

Bailey's latest film, Jurassic World Rebirth, is set to release in theaters on July 2.
