Lil Dicky, the rapper, actor, and comedian, has partnered with Xfinity on their WiFi Is Booming campaign, contributing a new take on the Outhere Brothers' 1994 classic "Boom Boom Boom". The collaboration is a natural fit, given that both Lil Dicky and Xfinity hail from Philadelphia.
A Philly Connection
Lil Dicky, whose real name is Dave Burd, grew up in the Elkins Park neighborhood of Philadelphia, while Xfinity, formerly Comcast, was founded in the city in 1963. The rapper tells PEOPLE that he likes the Philadelphia connection, saying, "Growing up in Philly, you always saw Xfinity, and I can't even remember a time where that brand and that cable company wasn't a part of watching all the sports."
A New Take on a Classic
The idea for the collaboration came about when Lil Dicky posted about a pickup line online, which involved the phrase "Boom, boom, boom, let me hear you say way-oh". Xfinity saw the post and thought it would be a great fit for their campaign about booming Wi-Fi. Lil Dicky tells PEOPLE, "It's rare that I happen to like a brand's idea, but I did in this case."
A Fun Music Video
For the remix's music video, Lil Dicky worked with past collaborator Phillip R Lopez to bring the concept of being pulled into the internet for a wild ride on Xfinity's high-speed Wi-Fi to life. The rapper had one request: he would be staying close to the ground. "Philip wanted me to be hanging - I don't even know how to describe it, but as if I was dangling," Burd explains. "And I was just like, 'Man, that's going to be the most painful, uncomfortable eight hours of my life.'" Instead, they came up with the idea of Lil Dicky riding a computer mouse.
Focusing on Music
Since his hit show Dave ended in May 2023, Lil Dicky has been thrilled to focus strictly on music. "I'm in heaven. I've been working on my own music every day," he says. "It's ironic... I just hadn't had the time to really focus on music stuff while making the show - and it's really impossible to do both at once."
Cheesesteak Recommendations
As a Philly native, Lil Dicky has a few cheesesteak recommendations if you're in town and need more than booming Wi-Fi. "I always love this place called Steve's. People really like Dalessandro's," says Burd. "The very touristy spot is the one where it's Geno's and Pat's right across the street from each other. That's kind of a fun vibe, but if you do that, Pat's is definitively better than Geno's."
