Ashanti and Nelly, stars of Peacock's new reality series "Nelly and Ashanti: We Belong Together," have revealed that they almost rekindled their relationship about 10 years ago, but it didn't work out due to bad timing.
In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, Ashanti explained that they both had a lot going on in their careers at the time, and they didn't live in the same state. "It wasn't meant to happen then," she said. "We had a lot of kinks to work out."
Ashanti added that she and Nelly needed to do some "growing and learning" before getting back together. "I don't think the timing was great back then," she said.
Nelly, on the other hand, believes that relationships require a leap of faith and compromise, especially when you're in the entertainment industry. "Compromise is tough when you're leading businesses," he said. "She's leading the Ashanti business, I'm leading the Nelly business."
The couple, who started dating in 2003, broke up, spent years apart, and then reunited in September 2023. They quietly got married in December of the same year and have an 11-month-old son named KK together.
Now, they're starring in a reality series that gives fans a glimpse into their married life. "Communication is extremely important, especially with us traveling," Ashanti said. "Sometimes, he's on the other side of the world. And sometimes, I'm on the other side of the world."
