Legendary director Steven Spielberg has revealed his desire to make a Western film, a genre that has eluded him for decades. The Oscar-winning director made the announcement at an event honoring him with a state-of-the-art movie theater in his name on the Universal Pictures lot.

Spielberg told attendees at the star-studded event, "I'm making a lot of movies and I have no plans… ever… to retire." The event was attended by celebrities such as John Travolta, Vin Diesel, Seth Rogen, Ke Huy Quan, Colman Domingo, Dakota Fanning, and Jeff Goldblum, among others.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Spielberg expressed his appetite for the Western genre, saying, "It's something that's eluded me for all of these decades." The director has made films in every genre except Westerns, but he hopes to change that soon.
The event came on the heels of the 50th anniversary of Jaws, the Universal movie that first made Spielberg a blockbuster director. Guests at the event were treated to footage from his upcoming action-adventure movie, which marks his first project in the genre since 2018's Ready Player One.
Spielberg's upcoming projects as a producer include Jurassic World Rebirth (in theaters July 2), The Thursday Murder Club (on Netflix Aug. 28), and Gremlins 3. He also recently weighed in on the experience of filming Jaws in National Geographic's upcoming documentary Jaws @ 50: The Definitive Inside Story, which premieres July 10 and streams the following day on Disney+ and Hulu.
