Wendy McMahon, the President and CEO of CBS News, announced her resignation on May 19, citing that she could not agree on the path forward with management. This decision comes amidst a $20 billion lawsuit filed by President Donald Trump's team against the network.

McMahon, who has been leading the network for four years, wrote in a memo to her colleagues, "It's become clear that the company and I do not agree on the path forward. It's time for me to move on and for this organization to move forward with new leadership."

What Led to Wendy McMahon's Departure?

According to sources, McMahon struggled to agree on how the company would move forward amidst the lawsuit with President Trump. The lawsuit, which alleges that the network edited former Vice President Kamala Harris' answer in an October 2024 interview, has been a significant challenge for the network.

Paramount Global, the parent company of CBS News, is reportedly close to settling the lawsuit, which could impact the company's merger with Skydance Media.

Who Else Has Left CBS?

In addition to McMahon's departure, 60 Minutes executive producer Bill Owens resigned in April, citing difficulties in maintaining journalistic independence. Longtime anchor Scott Pelley also expressed his concerns about the network's coverage of President Trump's administration, stating that the pending lawsuit had influenced the network's editorial decisions.

Norah O'Donnell, the former anchor and managing editor of CBS Evening News, stepped down in January 2025, but remained with the network as a senior correspondent.

Who is Replacing Wendy McMahon?

The person replacing McMahon has not been named, but George Cheeks, the co-CEO of Paramount Global and president and CEO of CBS, announced that Tom Cibrowski, the head of CBS News, and Jennifer Mitchell, the head of CBS Stations, would be reporting to him during the transition.
