Maren Morris is feeling thankful and celebrated her first Pride Month since coming out as bisexual in June 2024. The Grammy winner gave a special shout-out to her fans during West Hollywood's OUTLOUD Festival on Friday, May 30, thanking them for their "warmth and support."
"Thank you guys, girls, and everyone in between," she began during her set, according to fan-captured video footage via TikTok. "I didn't want to make a big press release or anything, I just wanted to say it and be normal. That's all any of us want."
Morris continued, "But what I did not expect, which was so kind, was the open arms and the warmth and support from y'all."
Morris has been a vocal advocate for the LGBTQ+ community throughout her career. In a May interview with The Zoe Report, Morris spoke about her sexuality, saying that she always knew she was "attracted to men and women."
"I think because I've been in straight relationships the last 15 years of my life, which has been consumed by my music career and living in Nashville, I never felt brave enough to talk about it," she said.
Morris now feels differently and added that she wants to "connect with my fans and my queer community."
"Especially in a time where you're in this free-for-all post-divorce reckoning, community has been so necessary for me and life-saving," she said. "Being honest and being vulnerable is the only way that you find community."
Morris also spoke to PEOPLE in August 2024 about how writing her song "Push Me Over" inspired her to come out.
"I didn't ever feel before I had the courage to say that, and it was something that I knew for decades, but I think it was just the timing of: I'm in a space to say this without anything really getting misconstrued, and it's Pride Month," she said at the time, referring to her Instagram post about coming out.
Morris added, "I also had just felt comfortable in myself enough to write a song like 'Push Me Over.' It gave me the little shot of courage I needed, I guess."
