Brian Wilson's Final Years: Comfort, Music, and Family Amidst Illness and Conservatorship

Published: June 11, 2025

Brian Wilson, the Beach Boys' co-founder and singer, passed away on June 11 at the age of 82. In his final years, Wilson dealt with a "major neurocognitive disorder (such as dementia)" and a conservatorship, but he remained surrounded by love and family.

Wilson's wife, Melinda, who passed away in January 2024 at the age of 77, was instrumental in helping Wilson escape the control of his longtime therapist and legal guardian, Dr. Eugene Landy, who was accused of exerting "undue influence" over Wilson's life. Wilson credited Melinda with giving him the emotional security he needed to have a career.

After Melinda's death, Wilson's family filed for a conservatorship, citing his inability to properly provide for his personal needs for physical health, food, clothing, or shelter. Despite this, he remained "well taken care of" and enjoyed his favorite activities, such as watching the Los Angeles Lakers and eating at Musso & Frank's in Hollywood.

Final Public Appearance and Beach Boys Reunion

In May 2024, Wilson made his final public appearance at the premiere of the Disney+ documentary "The Beach Boys" at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles. He was in good spirits as he posed for photos with his former bandmates David Marks, Al Jardine, Blondie Chaplin, Mike Love, and Bruce Johnston.

At the premiere, he shared a sweet moment with his first wife, Marilyn, saying "I love you, Mary, I love you" in a heartwarming exchange.

Family Bonding and Music

Carnie, Wilson's daughter, said that she saw her dad three times a month and that they continued to bond over music. She would play him random songs, and he would respond with enthusiasm. She also shared that Wilson was "aware" of the impact his music had on his many fans.

Wilson's family ensured that he remained "comfortable" and surrounded by love, even as he dealt with his illness and conservatorship.
