Amerie, the 45-year-old singer, has revealed that she has been separated from her husband Lenny Nicholson since 2023, and the couple is currently going through a divorce process. The news came during an interview with radio host and podcaster Angela Yee ahead of the 2025 BET Awards.
The "Why Don't We Fall In Love" artist confirmed the news, saying "I was, but not now," after Angela Yee mentioned that she had been "locked in" for a long time. Amerie further clarified that she doesn't usually share details about her personal life, except for a recent guest appearance on The Joe Budden Podcast, where she mentioned the separation.
Amerie and Lenny Nicholson, her former manager, began dating in 2007 and got married in 2011. They share a 7-year-old son, River Rowe Charles. According to Essence, Nicholson managed Amerie's career at one point.
Amerie's Thoughts on Relationships and Personal Growth
In the full interview, the "Talkin' to Me" artist shared more insight, saying all the relationships we have are meant to teach us something, and everything is a blessing. She emphasized the importance of finding someone who amplifies you, rather than staying the same or dimming each other's light.
Amerie also stated that it's been a couple of years since they've been separated, and it takes a short time to get married and a long time to get divorced, as they say.
