The Outsiders, a classic coming-of-age novel by S.E. Hinton, is getting an oral history treatment in a new book titled "Staying Gold: The Oral History of The Outsiders". The book, co-authored by Danny Boy O'Connor and Jimmie Tramel, will feature archival photos, stories, and personal recollections from the cast members, including Ralph Macchio, Rob Lowe, Leif Garrett, C. Thomas Howell, and Diane Lane.

Danny Boy O'Connor, founder of The Outsiders House Museum in Oklahoma, expressed his excitement about the project, saying, "As a lifelong fan, I'm honored to help connect the dots and co-create the oral history of 'The Outsiders.'"

O'Connor and Tramel will use their knowledge to recount how Hinton's 1967 novel was transformed into the 1983 feature film by Francis Ford Coppola. The book will also feature personal recollections from S. E. Hinton and late film producer Fred Roos, as well as David Arquette, who appeared in The Outsiders' drama television series.

Jimmie Tramel, "I love oral history books because they can make readers feel as if they are eavesdropping on a once-in-a-lifetime group conversation. It's an honor to be asked, along with Danny Boy O'Connor, to share the oral history of something as iconic as The Outsiders."

The book, to be published in November 2025, will share the story of how The Outsiders became a household name, with over 20 million copies sold. The film, which stuck to the original storyline, was produced on location in Oklahoma, where the original novel was set.

Dana Leydig, Executive Editor at Viking Books, said, "Few books can tout the sort of success and longevity of S. E Hinton's The Outsiders. Millions of copies sold, a film directed by the legendary Francis Ford Coppola, a Tony award-winning musical, and an entire museum dedicated to enshrining its legacy."
