Former NBA player Scot Pollard has opened up about the emotional meeting with the family of his heart donor, Casey Angell. The 50-year-old underwent a heart transplant in February 2024 and decided to reach out to the family to express his gratitude for the "gift of life."
In a heartfelt letter, Pollard wrote to the family, "My name is Scot. I live in Indiana and I'm writing this letter to express mine and my family's unending appreciation for your loved one's gift of life. My wife, myself, our four children, our extended family and friends are all forever grateful!"
He also expressed his desire to meet the family in person to express his gratitude. The family responded three months later, revealing the name of the donor, Casey Angell.
The family, including Casey's wife Pamela, son William, and sister Megan, met with Pollard earlier this year. They shared stories of Casey's life and even listened to Casey's heartbeat through Pollard's chest using a stethoscope.
"There was a connection there that I felt," Pollard said of the meeting. "I know how that feels as a child, to lose your father."
Pollard's health battle and transplant journey are documented in the new documentary, Heart of Pearl. He has also become an advocate for organ donation, saying, "What we hope for moving forward is just that I can keep living a good life because of their gift."
