Cobie Smulders Reveals Unconventional Method for Getting Ready for Intimate Scenes on 'How I Met Your Mother'

Cobie Smulders recently reunited with her 'How I Met Your Mother' co-star Josh Radnor and series co-creator Craig Thomas on their podcast, 'How We Made Your Mother'.

During the podcast, Smulders revealed that she would often whisper "extremely inappropriate" things to Radnor before they filmed intimate scenes together. This was her way of getting into character and setting the mood for the scene.

Smulders explained that in acting, there's a concept called "the moment before," which involves visualizing what you were doing just before the scene begins. She would use this method to get Radnor in the right mindset, often whispering to him whatever sexual act their characters, Robin and Ted, had just done.

Radnor added that Smulders was so good at timing it that she would "stick the landing" just before the cameras rolled. He joked that if acting stops, she should try writing "the filthiest romance novels" because she has a real talent for spinning the dirtiest webs of narrative that were "shocking" and still "delightful."

Smulders refused to reveal any specific examples of what she would whisper, saying that it was a "moment in time" that only she and Radnor knew exactly what was said and the context of what was said and how it was delivered. Radnor added that the listener's imagination was free to wander.

Radnor added that he was "extremely breakable" — meaning that he often started laughing during scenes when he shouldn't have — and that on the blooper reels from the show, he's probably laughing because of Smulders' whispers.

Smulders said she could often lose it with laughter during a scene, too. She added that Jason Segel, who played Marshall Eriksen, was usually the one who got her to laugh.
