Miley Cyrus is sharing the secrets behind her iconic voice, and it's all about her "unique anatomy". In a recent episode of Apple Music 1's The Zane Lowe Show, the 32-year-old singer revealed that she has a large polyp on her vocal cord, which contributes to her distinct tone and texture.
The "Flowers" hitmaker explained that her vocal cord condition, known as Reinke's Edema, is not caused by abuse or partying, but it's something she's had since she was 21. She described performing with the condition as "running a marathon with ankle weights on", making it challenging to talk and sing.
Cyrus also shared that her condition makes it difficult to go incognito, even with a hat and sunglasses. She recalled a time during COVID when people would recognize her despite wearing a mask, saying "The minute I'm in a grocery store, someone goes, 'Your mask isn't working. I know that it's you.'"
Despite the challenges, Cyrus is not willing to have surgery to remove the polyp, citing the risk of losing her signature voice. She said, "The chance of waking up from a surgery and not sounding like myself is a probability."
Cyrus is set to release her forthcoming visual album, Something Beautiful, on May 30, which will feature 13 original tracks. She has already shared several singles, including "Prelude", "End of the World", and "More to Lose".
