Gloria Estefan, the legendary Cuban singer, has been married to Emilio Estefan for an impressive 46 years. In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, Gloria shared the secret to their enduring relationship, which she believes is rooted in respect, admiration, and commitment.
Gloria emphasized that respect is a crucial element in their marriage, saying, "All I can tell you is that respect is a big part of it." She also highlighted the importance of admiration for Emilio, stating, "We both admire each other. Commitment, because I feel like people are so instantaneous now."
Further reflecting on their relationship, Gloria noted that their ability to "stick it out" through tough times has made them stronger. "But I feel like a lot of people give up too quickly, and for us, everything we've gone through has just deepened the experience."
Gloria also emphasized the value of having a partner who is in your corner." She said, "You need to have somebody in your corner, and you need to be in your partner's corner. There's always a balance."
Gloria and Emilio's Collaborative Efforts
Gloria's latest studio album, "Raíces," which was written primarily by Emilio, showcases their collaborative efforts. Emilio presented Gloria with the song "Raíces" a couple of years ago, and she fell in love with it. However, she didn't have the bandwidth to make an album at the time. Emilio then suggested that he write the album for her, and Gloria trusted him completely.
The album "Raíces" celebrates Gloria's Cuban roots and is a very personal love story. Gloria described it as "a very personal love story. There's a lot of love songs."
Emilio's Love Song
Gloria shared a sweet anecdote about Emilio writing a love song for her. She said, "Emilio said to me, 'Oh, I wrote you a love song.' I go, 'Babe, you're going to sing it?' He goes, 'No, you're going to sing it for me.' I go, 'You wrote your own love song? I love that.'"
Gloria added that the album "Raíces" reminds us that we all are where we came from, and those people who nurtured us and loved us will always be with us. Our culture is important to celebrate... It makes us who we are."
