Coco Gauff, the 21-year-old tennis sensation, was left awestruck by the thunderous standing ovation from the New York Liberty at the Barclays Center on Tuesday. This came just three days after she clinched her second Grand Slam title at the French Open in Paris.
Gauff, who sat courtside between her brother Cameron and Natalia Bryant, was visibly surprised by the rousing reception. She smiled and waved to the crowd, later joking with Liberty mascot Ellie the Elephant".
In an interview with ESPN's Holly Rowe, Gauff expressed her surprise, saying, "That was insane. I wasn't expecting everyone to stand up, and it just feels so cool to come back to such a warm reception."
Gauff Deflects Attention, Talks Basketball
Gauff tried to deflect the spotlight, saying she was excited to be at her first WNBA game. She confessed that she played basketball when she was younger but wasn't good, which led her to focus on the racket sport.
"I love basketball," Gauff said. "I would say that would [have been] my second or third choice, [but] I played a little bit when I was younger, and I was not good, which is why I play tennis."
Gauff, currently ranked world No. 2, will have another chance to win her third major title at Wimbledon later this month. She previously won the US Open in 2023.
