Richard "Rick" Hurst, the beloved actor who played Deputy Cletus Hogg on the popular sitcom "The Dukes of Hazzard," has passed away at the age of 79.

Hurst's death was confirmed by his first wife, Candace Kaniecki, who told TMZ that he died unexpectedly in the morning on Thursday, June 26. The cause of death is currently unknown.

Hurst was known for his iconic role as Deputy Cletus Hogg, which he played from 1980 to 1983. He brought "unforgettable charm" to the character, and his gentle smile and impeccable comedic timing made every scene brighter.

Ben Jones, who played Cooter on the show, also confirmed Hurst's death to The New York Times. The official fan page for "The Dukes of Hazzard" paid tribute to Hurst in a lengthy Instagram post, describing him as "more than a character" to the fan base.

"He was family. His gentle smile, impeccable comedic timing, and kind-hearted spirit made every scene brighter," the caption read. "Off-screen, Rick was known for his generosity, humility, and love for connecting with fans at events across the country."

Hurst is survived by his son, Ryan Hurst, who played Opie Winston on "Sons of Anarchy," as well as his first wife and second wife, Katherine Shelley Weir.

In addition to his role on "The Dukes of Hazzard," Hurst appeared in several other TV shows and movies, including "On the Rocks," "Steel Magnolias," "Earth Girls are Easy," and "The Karate Kid Part III."
