Tina Fey has revealed how Steve Carell reacted when she pitched his character, Nick's, fate in the Netflix series The Four Seasons. Fey, who co-created and stars in the show, shared the surprising twist with Carell, and his response was all too familiar.

Fey recalled that Carell was like, "Why does this keep happening to me?" when she told him about his character's death in a car crash. This reaction is reminiscent of his experience with his character's similar ending in The Morning Show.

Fey explained that the writers' decision to add a major character's death was to make the story more human scale. "We felt like at the time that everything was sort of grounded and human scale in terms of story, and we were like we do want something to happen, and that is a thing that happens to humans," she said.

The Four Seasons, a comedy series, follows three pairs of couples as they navigate the breakdown of Nick and Anne's marriage, which leaves the group of friends "completely upended" and trickles into each of the four vacations they take that year.

Fey also shared that the writers' room for season 2 is already underway after Netflix announced the series' renewal earlier this month. "It's been really nice, we have the same exact writing staff and it's already been really interesting for us to come together and share experiences, not just talk about the previous season but also our own lives," she said.

Fey added that without the movie to provide a template as in the first season, "we are kind of starting from scratch." The writers have been generous, and a lot of what was seen in season one came from the writers' own lives.
