Bestselling and multiple award-winning author Joyce Carol Oates has a new novel out, and it's a classic psychological suspense that traces the disappearance of an English teacher.
Oates' new novel 'Fox' follows the disappearance of the charismatic teacher Francis Fox, "a charming English teacher new to the idyllic Langhorne Academy, [who] beguiles many of his students, their parents, and his colleagues at the elite boarding school, while leaving others wondering where he came from," an official synopsis teases.
After his car is discovered half-submerged in a pond and unidentified body parts turn up in the woods nearby, the entire community — including Detective Horace Zwender and his deputy — starts to ask questions about how well they really know the man.
Oates, who has long considered herself an "experimental" writer, wanted to explore some of that same technique, but from multiple points of view with a mystery where the body is discovered in the first chapter. "That's the classic whodunit. I mean, I could have written that novel in a more conventional way as a literary novel. But I wanted to use the form."
Not all authors welcome the constraints that come with genre fiction, she points out. But Oates is in a class of her own. She's also the author of such bestsellers as 'Blonde' and 'We Were the Mulvaneys', a recipient of a National Humanities Medal, the National Book Critics Circle's Ivan Sandrof Life Achievement Award, the National Book Award in Fiction, and a five-time finalist for the Pulitzer Prize.
