Dove Cameron, the actress and singer, has opened up about her experience with Hollywood in a recent cover story for NYLON. In the interview, she reveals that she had to take a step back in 2022 and re-evaluate her life and career.

Cameron, 29, told NYLON that she didn't go out, didn't see anyone, didn't have relationships, and didn't see her friends more than a few times. Instead, she holed up in her house and tried to figure out how she was going to move forward, if she could move forward in the industry.

The actress revealed that she contemplated quitting Hollywood completely and had to take stock of all the things she had been neglecting. She had endured a particularly tumultuous time for her family and personal life when she first entered Hollywood.

Cameron explained that being on set allowed her to play pretend because she had someone who was her mom and her dad and her best friend and her boyfriend, and she was like, "Wow, wouldn't this be amazing if this was real life?"

For Cameron, acting allowed her to have a "fake life" for five days out of the week. She said, "I spent less time being me, and that became addictive. I was like, 'This is so much better than what's going on in my personal life.'"

Cameron also opened up about taking a hiatus to focus on her mental health. In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE in March, she revealed that she had to take a break and slow down, which she said is "the best thing that I've done for myself."
