Actress Barbara Eden, 91, has revealed that she almost quit her iconic role as Jeannie in the hit TV show "I Dream of Jeannie" due to her pregnancy.
In a recent interview with Jennie Garth on her podcast "I Choose Me," Eden shared that she was pregnant during the first season of the show, which premiered in 1965. She explained that she had tried to conceive for a long time with her husband Michael Ansara and was thrilled to finally be expecting.
However, Eden's pregnancy posed a problem for the show's production. She recalled telling the show's creator Sidney Sheldon that she was pregnant and couldn't continue with the role. But Sheldon was determined to find a way to make it work. Eden said that Sheldon told her to give it a couple of days to see if they could find a solution.
The solution they came up with was to creatively hide Eden's pregnancy. Eden remembered one instance where she was asked to wear a bikini, but she refused, citing her pregnancy. The director, Gene Nelson, came to her dressing room and told her to put on the bathing suit, but Eden was hesitant. She eventually put it on, but only in front of Nelson, who then realized the issue. The solution was to use a tire to cover her stomach, with towels on top to hide what it was.
Eden also shared that the show mostly used "lots of material" in front of her to hide her bump. She gave birth to her son Matthew Ansara in August 1965, and the show ultimately ran from 1965 to 1970.
Garth, who costarred with Eden on the 1989 TV series Brand New Life, also shared a similar experience. She got pregnant shortly after the pilot of the sitcom What I Like About You and remembered they went to "great lengths" to hide her bump.
