Oscar-nominated filmmaker Denis Villeneuve is set to direct the next James Bond film, marking the 28th installment in the iconic franchise. The movie will be the first produced by Amazon MGM Studios following Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson's decision to step back from overseeing the series.
Villeneuve, known for his work on the Dune franchise, expressed his excitement about taking on the project, saying, "Some of my earliest movie-going memories are connected to 007. I grew up watching James Bond films with my father, ever since Dr. No with Sean Connery. I'm a die-hard Bond fan."
The director continued, "To me, he's sacred territory. I intend to honor the tradition and open the path for many new missions to come. This is a massive responsibility, but also, incredibly exciting for me and a huge honor. Amy, David, and I are absolutely thrilled to bring him back to the screen. Thank you to Amazon MGM Studios for their trust."
Villeneuve will be working alongside producers Amy Pascal and David Heyman, who said, "Denis Villeneuve has been in love with James Bond movies since he was a little boy. It was always his dream to make this movie, and now it's ours, too. We are lucky to be in the hands of this extraordinary filmmaker."
Casting for the new Bond has not been announced, and Amazon MGM has yet to reveal a writer for the project.
Villeneuve has had a successful career in Hollywood, earning an Oscar nomination for his film Incendies and going on to direct projects like Prisoners, Enemy, and Sicario. He also earned a Best Director Oscar nod for Arrival and nominations for Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay for Dune: Part One.
