Dakota Johnson May Have Finally Found Her Perfect Match with 'Materialists'

Tom Gliatto reviews the latest TV and movie releases for PEOPLE Magazine, and he's got his eyes on Dakota Johnson's latest film, 'Materialists'. The romantic comedy, directed by Celine Song, also stars Pedro Pascal and Chris Evans, and it's a swipe-right experience that's elusive but not inscrutable, as well as enjoyably, delicately playful.

Johnson plays Lucy, a matchmaker who's led nine couples to the altar, but she's not cynical, exactly. She's seen life from both sides now, and she's willing to risk ending the film with no one blissfully in love, with forever-after consigned to the dustbin. The film is constructed according to rom-com tradition, but with a twist - it's more about steering clear of Mr. Wrong than finding Mr. Right.

The film is a romantic comedy, but it's not your typical rom-com. It's more about Lucy's journey, and her desire for luxury and affluence. Johnson hits this particular note with a kind of triste regretfulness, and she always looks as if she has no choice but to smile wanly, since the other option is probably sobbing.

Pedro Pascal plays Harry, a rich, dashing gentleman with a $15 million penthouse, good taste, and an attractively dry, modest sense of humor. He's like a more poetic Winklevoss twin, and he overshadows Evans, who's handsome and likable, but stuck in a less sophisticated role.

The film blossoms into something like happiness towards the end, but you should discover that surprise for yourself. Johnson has long been an actress in search of - and deserving of - the perfect vehicle. This may be it.

'Materialists' is currently in theaters. Don't miss out on this romantic comedy that's a swipe-right experience!
