WWE fans, it's time to say goodbye to John Cena in the ring. The 48-year-old wrestling superstar has confirmed that he will not be returning to the WWE after his final performance in December.
Cena made the announcement during an appearance on Good Morning America on Wednesday, June 25, while promoting his new film, Heads of State, alongside Idris Elba. When asked about the possibility of returning to the ring, Cena said, "There is no way. I don't want to speak in absolutes, because I don't want to close any opportunity, but I made a promise to the fans who allowed me to be here for a quarter of a century."
Cena's farewell tour is currently underway, and he wants to make sure that his last show feels special for his longtime WWE fans. "This is an event that I want people to attend," he said. "It's very exclusive, the moments I share with them. I wouldn't want to ruin that for selfish gain."
Cena initially announced his retirement from the WWE in July 2024, during a surprise appearance at the WWE's Money in the Bank event. His announcement was met with loud booing from fans, but Cena is determined to stick to his decision.

While Cena may be hanging up his wrestling boots, he's not saying goodbye to the WWE world entirely. In an interview with PEOPLE in January, Cena said that he will always remain a part of the WWE family in some capacity, whether it's through mentorship or advocacy for the brand.
Cena's new film, Heads of State, sees him playing the president alongside stars like Jack Quaid, Idris Elba, and Priyanka Chopra Jonas. You can catch him in action on the big screen soon.
