The Baltimore Orioles are mourning the loss of 19-year-old minor leaguer Luis Guevara, who died following a jet ski crash on Sunday, June 15, in Sarasota, Florida.
Guevara, an infielder from Venezuela, made his debut in the U.S. this year, playing 24 games for Single-A Delmarva and two more with Double-A Chesapeake. According to the Orioles, two watercrafts, including one Guevara was on, were involved in a head-on collision. Four people fell into the water, with two having minor injuries and two others, including Guevara, hospitalized at the time.
Orioles general manager Mike Elias said in a statement, "Luis was a beloved member of our organization, and we are devastated following his tragic passing. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and teammates, and we ask for their continued privacy during this difficult time."
The Orioles' Florida Complex League games were postponed on Monday and Tuesday following Guevara's death. The team and fans are still reeling from the loss of the young player, who was signed by the Orioles as an international free agent in January 2023.
As the baseball world mourns the loss of this talented young player, fans can take a moment to reflect on the fragility of life and the importance of cherishing every moment.
