Rainn Wilson, who played Dwight Schrute on the beloved comedy series The Office, recently shared his thoughts on the show's success and how it changed after Steve Carell's departure.

On the June 19 episode of Good Guys Podcast with Josh Peck and Ben Soffer, Wilson explained that the show found its footing in season 2, when the cast and crew adjusted the tone to make it more "warm" and "human." He credited Steve Carell, who played Michael Scott, with being a central piece of the show's success.
"Steve does his hair a little better. We're wearing a little nicer suits. The set gets a little warmer in the way that it's lit. It's shot just a little bit friendlier. And it did help a lot," Wilson said.
However, when Carell left the show during season 7, Wilson said things became "chaotic" as they struggled to find the tone of the show without the comic engine of Michael Scott.
"When Steve left, then it was a little bit chaotic of trying to figure out the tone of the show and who's the lead and how are we telling these stories without the comic engine of the show, which is Michael Scott, and without one of the greatest comic actors in American history at the center of our show," Wilson said.

Wilson also shared that he wasn't surprised when Carell decided to leave, given his blossoming movie career.
"We knew it was coming for a long time, because Steve was such a big movie star. Of course, he's gonna leave The Office when he can," Wilson said.
