The Mamma Mia! franchise might be getting a new cast member soon. Producer Judy Craymer recently hinted that she could envision pop star Sabrina Carpenter in a role in the third installment of the movie.

“She’d be a goddess or some relation who would look very much like Meryl Streep,” Craymer said in an interview with Deadline. She also mentioned that Carpenter, fans of her music, and similar artists “are influenced by” ABBA's music, which comprises the vast majority of tunes heard in the jukebox musical movies.

“It’ll happen when it happens,” Craymer added of the potential for Carpenter to join the cast. She also confirmed that a script has been written for the movie and that Meryl Streep would reprise her role as Donna, even though the character is depicted as dead in 2018's sequel Here We Go Again.>

Amanda Seyfried, who plays the series' lead character Sophie, expressed interest in having Carpenter portray her character's daughter in an October 2024 interview with ABC News. Seyfried said she would be open to having Carpenter play her daughter, even suggesting that she could use old age makeup to make it work.

The Mamma Mia! franchise has been a huge success, with the first film following Sophie's attempts to connect with her biological father by inviting three different men to her wedding. The sequel, which starred Lily James as a young version of Streep's character, flashed back to Donna's encounters with Sophie's three possible fathers as Sophie and her husband Sky prepare to welcome their own child in the present.
